The Runnin’ Bucks cross-country team ran a split schedule this past week, as squads competed at both the Odessa Invitational on Thursday and at the “Runnin’ with the Braves” meet in Iraan on Saturday.
The high school boys and girls traveled to Odessa on Thursday, where they competed against runners from 10 schools.
The Runnin’ Bucks had one of their best showings of the season in the high school boys division. Alpine placed four runners in the top 21 places, and finished 4th overall in the team standings.
Tony Moralez led the charge for the Runnin’ Bucks on the mostly flat, grassy course as he finished in 4th place. He was followed by Forrest Gatewood in 7th, Peyton Marett in 9th and Kyle Parker in 21st. Rounding out the scoring for the Runnin’ Bucks, Colton McCabe took 47th, followed closely by Gerardo Gonzalez in 48th. Josey Nunez came in 57th, Joe Passalacqua in 59th and Ryder Skillern in 60th.

The Middle School Runnin’ Bucks traveled to Iraan on Saturday to compete on a cloudy, blustery morning in the “Runnin’ on the Warpath” Invitational. Once again, the Runnin’ Bucks middle schoolers turned in outstanding performances.
In a field of 74 runners in the Junior High Girls division, the Runnin’ Bucks captured four out of the top 10 places and took the team championship with a dominating score of 34. Monahans was the nearest competitor with 64 team points.
Rashae Skillern won the gold medal for the fifth time in six races so far this season. Sydnee McCallister came in 8th place, Felina Ramos took 9th, Cindy Moralez was 10th, Ariana Montes 14th and Genny Spear took 33rd.
In the Junior High Boys division, the Runnin’ Bucks won second place in the team standings by placing all five of their runners in the top 21 places out of 37 runners. Ammon Dean once again spearheaded the middle school boys’ effort with a 4th place finish. Wright Gatewood captured 15th place, Dart Dodds came in 19th, Armando Montes in 20th and Logan Cross in 21st.
The Runnin’ Bucks will be shorthanded this Saturday, with a number of runners traveling with the marching band to compete in Odessa. The team will head to Presidio to run in the inaugural “Runnin’ on the Rio Grande” Invitational on Saturday morning.
