Flooding closes Presidio-to-Lajitas road
FM 170 from Presidio to Lajitas has been closed because of extensive flooding on portions of the state highway, the Texas Department of Transportation announced Monday morning. The department expects the road to remain closed for approximately 7 days. In addition, the National Weather Service in Midland issued a flood warning for rural areas and streams in southeastern Presidio County until 9:45 p.m. Monday. The NWS received reports of flooding along FM 170. Travelers are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas. The high water levels on FM 170 are resulting in backflow up various tributaries to the Rio Grande and high water levels along the river. The National Weather Service said water releases from the Luis Leon Reservoir in northern Mexico contributed to the flooding. TxDOT said a flood warning means flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be generally slow and flash flooding is not expected. However, the department said residents of the area and travelers should take precautions immediately.
