None hurt during rush hour when roof takes flight
Avalanche staff No one's sure exactly how it happened -- a freak gust of wind probably -- but we do know that no one was injured when the roof of a storage shed at the old Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber yard flew off. The roof took flight right at 5 p.m. Monday in the midst of a short-lived storm that dumped anywhere from 0.4 to 0.04 of an inch of rain on the city. Most of the pieces of roof landed on an adjacent building that houses Video City. As of Tuesday afternoon, no damage had been reported to that building. Bits and pieces of the building flew "almost like shrapnel," said one witness on Holland Avenue. No reports of any kind of injuries or damage were reported. Mohamed Jouini, who owns the Foxworth-Galbraith property, said he plans to tear down the now-roofless storage shed and one other storage shed that was undamaged. Jouini is also the owner-operator of Alexander's restaurant. Witnesses speculated that a sudden gust of wind -- maybe even a wind shear -- caused the accident. Officially, winds gusting to 30 miles per hour were reported. After the roof flew off, friends, neighbors and people who just happened to be passing by immediately began gathering up the mess. In fact, Mike McMillan, owner/operator of the Highland Inn, was kept busy operating a tractor/dozer, which gathered up the twisted metal and deposited it inside the Foxworth-Galbraith work yard. Jouini did not have a damage estimate.
