Big Bend Update Fastest in Fort Davis: FORT DAVIS -- The Fort Davis Higher Education Foundation is sponsoring the Fastest in Fort Davis 5K (3.1-mile) Fun Run and Walk as part of the town's Fourth of July festivities on Saturday, July 5. Pre-registration runs through June 27. Race day registration starts at 7:45 a.m. July 5 at Jeff Davis County Park, with the race starting at 8:20 a.m. Winners in each division will be eligible to ride as royalty on the foundation's float in the parade, which starts at 10 a.m. Entry fee is $14 for those 12 and older and $5 for those under 12. To pre-register, send a registration form and check payable to Fort Davis Higher Education Foundation, P.O. Box 335 Fort Davis, TX 79734. After the parade, the foundation booth will be open near the courthouse. There will be a domino tournament from 1-5 p.m. and raffles. Tables and chairs will be in the shade. Proceeds benefit the foundation, which offers tuition scholarships to all graduates of Fort Davis High School. Fort Davis' "Coolest 4th" will cover three days, July 4, 5 and 6. Vendors will be around the Jeff Davis County Courthouse starting at 9 a.m. Friday, July 4, and there will be living history demonstrations at the Fort Davis National Historic Site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, in addition to vendors and living history at the fort, there will be a full slate of events including the pet contest, horse show, parade, old-fashioned bank robbery, first Saturday flea market and a historic weapons demonstration (watch the cannon fire!) at 3 p.m. at the fort. Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., a dance behind the Union Building will feature Walt Wilkins. Tickets are $10 for adults, while children 12 and younger get in free with an accompanying adult. On Sunday vendor booths will open at 9 a.m. Living history presentations will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fort, and historic weapons demonstrations will be at 3 p.m. at the fort. The first Sunday flea market will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The weekend's events will culminate with a fireworks display at dark at Jeff Davis County Park. Summer Off the Patio: FORT STOCKTON -- The Triple L Band will play at the "Summer Off the Patio" outdoor concert at 8 p.m. June 26 at Annie Riggs Memorial Museum. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Sponsors are Jean Hoffman and Bill and Pat Honaker. Healthy marriage classes throughout West Texas: Classes and services on healthy marriages are planned for Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio, Culberson, Hudspeth and El Paso counties, conducted by Model Cities-El Paso. Public forum at Gallego: A public forum will be held at 10 a.m. June 23 in Alpine to gather local input for a new initiative by the Permian Basin Community Centers. The forum, also called a stakeholder meeting, will be in the Gallego Center conference room on the Sul Ross State University campus. Called local planning and network development, this forum/approach is designed to plan and develop a network of mental health service providers, emphasize a choice of providers and allow for local control through stakeholder (public) input. However, the network will be managed by the Mental Health/Mental Retardation Center.
