More than 2,000 family members and friends gathered at Gallego Center last week to give Alpine High School's 2008 graduating class a rousing sendoff.

From start to finish, the night was a celebration of life, a look inside all the good things that make up the human condition.

Verl O'Bryant, AHS principal, put things in perspective immediately by telling the students, "We'll no longer push and pull; now, we're behind you as fellow adults."

O'Bryant was effusive in his praise of the Class of '08: "Each student has [his or her] own story. Every student of the class of 2008 made the right choices," he said.

To loud applause, he ended his remarks with this upbeat message, "For the first time in our history, every senior passed the TAKS."

O'Bryant then turned over the lectern for remarks from the salutatorian and valedictorian.

Salutatorian Kristin Vasquez emphasized the sense of family: "These words are not to make you cry or laugh but to reflect. We've grown together as a family ... starting in elementary school."

"We learned more than anyone can believe," she said. "Today, the training wheels come off."

Valedictorian Emily Hendryx gave a sometimes humorous, always thoughtful talk on the trip through elementary, middle and, finally, high school. "Here we are sitting in the chairs which we never thought we'd sit in," she said. "Now, it's time to ask, 'Where do I go from here?'"

Hendryx emphasized the lessons learned, the simple inclusive attitude toward life.

She also talked seriously about humor: "Remember the importance of laughter and always," she said, "and always have a Plan B."

Near the end, Hendryx quoted the Zen-like words of AHS teacher Rick Keith, "You are you and that is who you are supposed to be."
