Adobe workshop planned at Fort Davis Historic Site
Special to the Avalanche The Vanishing Treasures Program is offering an "Adobe and Lime Plaster Workshop" at Fort Davis National Historic Site on July 23-24. It is free and open to the public. This will be a hands-on and demonstration training opportunity in adobe making and repair, and the application of lime plaster to adobe. The intensive two-day session will include test wall construction, lime plaster conservation and repair, traditional lime wash, local site visits and an evening of lectures and discussion. "This is a great opportunity for people in the region who own or maintain adobe structures to come and learn, for free, how to better take care of this important part of our heritage," said Chuck Hunt, superintendent of Fort Davis National Historic Site. "Adobe architecture is such an important part of the history this region, and it would be sad to see this portion of our heritage fade away." Adobe was a very widely used construction technique in this area from the 1860s until around the 1930s. Adobe architecture in America evolved from the mix of traditions between the indigenous Native Americans of the Southwest and the Spanish colonists. A focus of the workshop is the ongoing preservation and limited restoration of the Fort Davis Post Hospital. Leading the workshop will be experts in the field including: Pat Taylor and Jean Fulton, senior projects coordinators for Cornerstones Community Partnerships; master craftsman Doug Porter, Heritage Program, School of Engineering at the University of Vermont; exhibit specialist Jake Barrow of the National Park Service; architectural conservator Karen Fix; and master mason Jamie Duggan. This workshop is co-sponsored by: Fort Davis National Historic Site, the Friends of Fort Davis National Historic Site, the University of Vermont Historic Preservation Program, the Vanishing Treasures Program and Cornerstones Community Partnerships. Registration for the two-day workshop is limited; the afternoon site visit and lectures can accommodate larger numbers. To register for the workshop or for additional information about these activities, call Susanna Liddell at 432-426-3224, extension 21. For detailed or technical questions concerning the workshop, contact Jake Barrow of the National Park Service Intermountain Regional Office at 505-988-6861 or e-mail jake_barrow@nps.gov. Fort Davis is one of America's best surviving examples of an Indian Wars frontier military post in the Southwest. From 1854 to 1891, Fort Davis was strategically located to protect emigrants, mail coaches and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and the Chihuahua Trail, and to control activities along the Comanche and Mescalero Apache war trails. Today, 24 roofed buildings and over 100 ruins and foundations are part of the site. Five of the buildings have been refurnished to the 1880s.
