W. Texas CASA volunteers sworn
West Texas children in foster care who have been abused or neglected now have three more people to speak out on their behalf. Carol Peterson, Libby Vernon and Anne Calaway were sworn in last Thursday as Frontier CASA volunteers by 394th District Judge Kenneth DeHart. Mary Waters had been sworn in previously. "I really appreciate what you're doing," DeHart told the new CASA volunteers. "I know all of you are very busy people [but this is] a worthy cause. Thank you." Frontier CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) works with children in seven West Texas counties - Brewster, Presidio, Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Pecos and Reeves - to help them in the journey to safe, permanent homes. Most of the children in these counties are placed in foster care in El Paso. In fiscal year 2007, almost 5,000 CASA volunteers throughout Texas advocated for the best interest of 20,509 abused and neglected children in foster care statewide. The CASA volunteers receive extensive training before being appointed to a case. After the volunteer is familiarized with the child's case and circumstances, as well as his/her family, the CASA worker provides detailed information to the court so the child can get into a permanent home as soon as possible. CASA volunteers also must attend ongoing training. CASA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It began in 1999 as a satellite program of Texas CASA, becoming independent in July 2001. It is funded by community donations and federal, state and foundation grants.
