Cinco de Mayo schedule of activities
Come celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Alpine this weekend. Here is a schedule of activities. Friday, May 2 5-7 p.m.: Enchilada supper, Alpine Community Center, 402 E. Gallego Ave. 7-11 p.m.: Cinco de Mayo kickoff social at Magoo's, 905 E. Ave. E Saturday, May 3 10:30 a.m.: Parade along Holland Avenue; grand marshal is Vidal "Vic" Torres 12-4 p.m.: 3rd Annual Car Show featuring Fat Daddy's Home of Loco Goat Low Riders/Street Machines/Rods/Trucks/Bikes and Motorcycles, Murphy Street between 5th and 6th Streets; also featuring Mystic Gitanas, Alpine Extreme All Star Cheerleaders, crafts and collectibles booths, food and drink booths 12-7 p.m.: DJ Music and A Few 2 Many - Tony, Rick & Jimmy 5-6 p.m.: Open tasting (chips provided) at 4th Annual Salsa on Sixth Contest: Categories are traditional, non-traditional and "Hotter Than Hell"; over $600 worth of prizes awarded. Highlight will be Cinco de Mayo Cookoff for 2008 in memory of Armando "Mando" Uranga; cookoffs will consist of menudo, cabrito, pan de squilia and asado. Entertainment at Kokernot Park: 12 - DJ Music; 1 p.m. - Alpine Middle School Folklorico Dancers; 1:45 p.m. - DJ Music; 2 p.m. - Sul Ross Extreme Cheerleaders; 2:30 p.m. - Mariachi-Santa Cruz; 4:30 p.m. - ABC Playschool Dancers; 5-7 p.m. - The Resonators Salsa On Sixth contest The 4th Annual Salsa On Sixth contest Saturday is sure to be hot, hot, hot! Open tasting (chips provided) is set from 5-6 p.m. Categories are traditional, non-traditional and "Hotter Than Hell." Entrants are to bring at least 1 quart of salsa/chile at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and they may enter more than one salsa. A signup sheet is posted at 104 North 6th St. and Holland Avenue.
