West Texans love their football
From the editor
West Texas probably has more hard-core football fans per capita than just about any other spot in the world. And chief among those, we believe, is Alpine's very own Felipe Fierro, who serves as an officer in the Alpine Police Department when he can't find a good football game to photograph.
Fierro was the chief football photographer for the Avalanche during this past season, shooting everything from Sul Ross to Bucks varsity to Junior Varsity to seventh- and eighth-graders.
We weren't able to pay Felipe very much. Well, we didn't pay him squat. We got him into the games and came up with a fancy set of credentials. If you followed the Avalanche's coverage of local football, you saw the extraordinary depth that Felipe brought to his photos. We were particularly impressed with the way he captured the human element.
Anyway, running a newspaper has a few perks - I emphasize the word "few" - one of which is access to press credentials at football bowl games. The bowls love to hand those things out, with a couple of stipulations: First, you have to actually work the game; second, you have to produce something.
We felt it would be nice to have Felipe cover the Sun Bowl in El Paso. We figured we'd use one photo in the back of the paper. The main thing, though, we'd get Felipe into the game and cruising the sidelines.
Well, he came back with some tremendous stuff. He found Alpine connections everywhere, in the tailgating, in the parking lot and in the stands.
In the top photo, you can barely make out Felipe. He's third from the right.
