Presbyterian Women's retreat set

Tres Rios Presbyterian Women will hold a fall retreat Friday through Sunday at Indian Lodge State Park outside of Fort Davis. The theme is "Above and Beyond - Hearing God's Call." Halloween Parade is Saturday



The Halloween Parade is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, beginning at 704 W. Sul Ross and ending at Alpine Middle School's carnival. Lineup is at 5 p.m. at Alpine ISD Administra-tion Building. There is no theme, but prizes will be awarded for best floats. Call Roxann Chavez at 432-294-0576 or 432-837-3334.

Middle school plans sale Saturday

The Alpine Middle School PTO is sponsoring a rummage sale from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at the school. Proceeds will benefit the PTO. For more information, call Rhea Thomas at 432-837-7054.

Bowden to speak at Front Street

Keith Bowden, a former Sul Ross graduate student who recently traveled the 1,200-mile Texas stretch of the Rio Grande, will speak at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Front Street Books Reading Room. Bowden will discuss his book, "Tecate Journals: Seventy Days on the Rio Grande" and the social and political issues that concern people living along the border. For details, call 432-837-3360.

4-H Horse Project sets practice

The Brewster/Jeff Davis County 4-H Horse Project will have a regular practice Sunday (Oct. 28) at Camp Mitre Peak. Be ready to ride by 2 p.m. sharp.

Interagency Meeting planned

The Interagency Meeting will be at noon Tuesday at Edelweiss Restaurant. Lunch is dutch treat. Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend will present a program on Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Call Webbie Carvajal at 432-837-7254.

Kiwanis plans spaghetti supper

The Kiwanis Club will hold its annual spaghetti supper at 5 p.m. Nov. 1 at Alpine Elementary School cafeteria. Tickets are $5; takeout will be available.

Woman's Club studies immigration

GFWC Woman's Club of Alpine will study immigration and border security at its meeting at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 1 at the Sul Ross library conference room. John Smietana, chief agent of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Border Patrol Sector, will be the guest speaker. In addition, two films will be shown: "The Ties that Bind: Immigration in the United States" and "Illegal Americans." Order poinsettias from SR alumni

Centennial School dinner is Nov. 4

The Centennial School Reunion Committee will hold a chile verde/asado plate fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church parish hall. Plates include choice of chile verde or asado plus rice, beans, tortilla, drink and dessert. Flauta plates will be available for children. Each meal costs $5. Committee members are selling tickets in advance; they are B.J. Project Graduation to meet Nov. 5

Project Graduation 2008 will meet at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Alpine High School foyer. Money will be collected for gift certificate sales, and members will discuss the enchilada dinner and cow patty ticket sales on Nov. 9.

Fox enters goat in Kentucky show

Adeline Fox, an FFA member at Alpine High School, has entered a Boer goat in the 34th annual North American International Livestock Exposition Nov. 3-16 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. NAILE is the world's largest purebred livestock show with more than 21,000 entries.
