It's time for "Livin' La Vida Lobo

Sul Ross State University alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends will be "Livin' La Vida Lobo" during homecoming 2007, scheduled Oct. 22-27.

The annual celebration includes the parade, daily student events, induction of three new members into the athletic Hall of Honor, presentation of three awards, crowning of homecoming royalty, luncheons, socials and more.

Former faculty member and Alumni Association director Robie Golden of Alpine and Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter of Midland will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards, and John Martin "Marty" Davis of Dallas and Fort Davis will receive the Slingin' Sammy Baugh Award for Outstanding Service to the university.

The Hall of Honor/Distinguished Alumni banquet will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the University Center.

Joining the Hall of Honor will be Joe George of Belton, who coached the Lobo football team to a 28-12 record during his four seasons; women's volleyball standout Ruth Roman McWilliams of Marfa; Dana Souter Pannell of San Saba, who excelled in women's basketball and tennis; and John Curry of Monahans, the current Sul Ross basketball announcer.

Tickets for the banquet are $17 per person.

The homecoming/reunion registration fee is $25, which includes Friday night social, admission to the football game, T-shirt, pre-game luncheon and Sunday brunch buffet.

Activities begin Monday, Oct. 22, with the introduction of homecoming queen and king candidates.

This will be done throughout an improvisational comedy routine by Pete Holmes starting at 7:30 p.m. in Marshall Auditorium. Coronation of the 2007 royalty will be held at halftime of the Lobo-Hardin-Simmons University football game Saturday, Oct. 27, at Jackson Field.

Events on Tuesday, Oct. 23, ]include a student organization Homecoming Derby, starting at 5:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, organizations will begin painting the Bar-SR-Bar at 5 p.m.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, Texas blues legend Doyle Bramhall, who lives in Alpine, will be in concert at Marshall Auditorium at 7 p.m. General admission is $3 for "An Original Night With Doyle Bramhall." Students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with Sul Ross ID. Proceeds from the concert go to the Ira Blanton Folklore Excellence Fund, which is used for folklore scholarships.

A homecoming chili cook-off will run from 1:30 to 6 p.m. at the Pete P. Gallego Center's south parking lot. Entry fee is $10 for on-campus students, faculty and staff.

Next up will be a volleyball match between the Sul Ross Lady Lobos and Howard Payne University at 6 p.m. at the Gallego Center.

The pep rally and bonfire activities start at 8 p.m. at the field adjacent to Kokernot Park.

From 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, homecoming registration will be in the University Center, followed by an alumni social gathering and reception honoring award recipients at the Museum of the Big Bend. Campus tours will be conducted at 3 p.m.

At 6 p.m., Sul Ross will meet Concordia University in an American Southwest Conference volleyball match in the Gallego Center. At 8:15 p.m., the musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" will be performed in the Studio Theatre, Francois Fine Arts Building. At 9 p.m., the lighting of the Bar-SR-Bar and a torch lighting ceremony in the Gallego Center parking lot will be held.

Bonfire wood collection begins Thursday, Oct. 18, and runs through Wednesday, Oct. 24. Collections will be managed by the ANRS Range and Wildlife Club; call 432-837-8225 to arrange for wood collection. Efforts will be made to pick up wood from callers between 5 and 7 p.m. within a 1-mile city limit radius. Wood donations may not include tires, paper, pretreated wood, furniture, trees, branches, roofing materials or garbage.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the annual homecoming parade will be held at 10:30 a.m., proceeding from the Alpine Civic Center, east on Holland Avenue to Jackson Field. Marty and Yana Davis will serve as grand marshals. A pre-game luncheon will be held at Jackson Field starting at noon.

At 1 p.m., the homecoming football game will feature the Lobos against Hardin-Simmons University. Coronation of the homecoming queen and king will be at halftime.

At 6:30 p.m., a pre-banquet gathering will be at the home of university President Vic Morgan and Mary Jane Morgan.

The 7:30 p.m. Hall of Honor/Distinguished Alumni banquet will be followed by a homecoming "Howl at the Moon" block party at Alexander's Cantina and Grill featuring Grupo De La Paz.
