Mike Perry new editor, publisher

Mike Perry is the new editor and publisher for the Alpine Avalanche.

He studied journalism at the University of Texas in Austin and later, history and English at Angelo State University in San Angelo.

As an undergraduate, he took a job with the San Angelo Standard-Times covering high school sports. After about a year, he transferred to the news department.

It was in San Angelo that he met his wife, Cindy, a native of Barnhart.

"We decided we wanted to try the 'so-called' big time," said Perry, and they moved to Dallas/Fort Worth, where he became a business reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and his wife worked for the Dallas Times Herald, and then the Dallas Morning News.

Perry later became the city editor, sports editor and managing editor, and then took a job at the Daily Oklahoman, with stops following in Mobile, Ala., Bryan and Killeen.

He comes to Alpine after serving as the editor and publisher of CorpusBeat magazine, which is owned by a non-profit organization created to teach students about the issues in their communities.

"That may be the best thing I've ever been involved with," said Perry.

He and his wife took their first trip together after they were married to Alpine.

"It's the place Cindy and I have wanted to be," he said. "It's coming home to the very best part of West Texas."

Perry is an avid cyclist, reader and "sports freak," and he said, "I bleed orange."

"We look forward to contributing to the community," said Perry. "We planned to retire in this area, and this just gave us an opportunity to get here 10 or 15 years earlier."

He is eager to explore the diverse population, interests and opinions not typically found in small towns.

"I want to meet everyone, literally," he said. "Don't be surprised if I'm knocking on your door."

"The Avalanche is a good, solid newspaper. The staff and I think there's a lot of opportunities here," he said. "No place is perfect, but this is as close as it gets for us."

Perry was born in Oklahoma City, but moved to Odessa in the '50s with his family. He is a graduate of Permian High School.
