Howard Payne defeats Lady Lobos 63-48
Unbeaten Howard Payne University jumped to a 42-18 halftime lead and defeated Sul Ross State University 63-48 in American Southwest Conference women's basketball action Monday (Dec. 4).
The visiting Lady Jackets upped their season record to 6-0, 4-0 in the ASC West, using 49 percent shooting in the first half and 18 Lady Lobo turnovers. Sul Ross outscored HPU 30-21 in the second session, but never got closer than 14 points, 58-44.
Stacey Blalock tallied 13 first-half points and Kim Hoffman 10 for Howard Payne. Blalock finished as the game's leading scorer with 20 points, while Meia Daniels added 17 and Hoffman 13. The winners hit 39 percent from the floor (23-59), but just one of 19 from three-point range and made 16 of 22 free throw tries.
Nitra Woods (Andrews) tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Sul Ross, 2-4, 1-3. Sul Ross held a 51-27 rebounding edge, but committed 27 turnovers and shot just 35 percent from the floor (17-48). The Lady Lobos netted one of seven beyond the arc and 13 of 22 at the foul stripe.
Janice Mitchell (Round Rock) added nine points and four assists, while Woods had three assists and two steals. Venus Castaneda (Iraan) contributed seven points and DeShonna Hill (Odessa) grabbed six rebounds.
Sul Ross will travel to Brownwood Saturday (Dec. 9) to play Fisk University in a non-conference tilt.
