'Paint the Town Red' is 2006 Sul Ross Homecoming theme Ten finalists for Sul Ross State University's 2006 Homecoming Queen and King have been selected from 16 candidates. "Paint the Town Red" is the theme of Homecoming 2006, with activities continuing through Sunday, Oct. 22. Queen finalists, their hometowns and sponsors are: Krystle Corral, senior, El Paso, Cheer Squad; Nitra Woods, junior, Andrews, Alpha Epsilon Rho; Lacey Cox, sophomore, Harper, Student Government Association; Jessie Gonzales, senior, San Antonio, Newman Club; and Yadira Villalobos, sophomore, Dalhart, Sully Productions. King finalists are: Daniel "Red" Brown, sophomore, Austin, Student Government Association; Russell Calder, sophomore, New Braunfels, Sully Productions; Joseph Torres, sophomore, Alpine, Cheer Squad; Kyndrick Hill, sophomore, Houston, Alpha Epsilon Rho; and Emilio Garza, junior, Pharr, Newman Club. The new royalty will be crowned Saturday, Oct. 21 during halftime of the Lobo-McMurry University football game at Jackson Field. Reigning Queen and King are Jeanette Rangel, El Paso, and Rockland Owens, Wharton. Other Homecoming activities include: Thursday, Oct. 19: A powderpuff football game will be played at 5:30 p.m. A snake dance follows, starting in the Sul Ross Circle and proceeding down Loop Road to Brown Ave., over to Fighting Buck Ave., then to the bonfire site (field adjacent to Kokernot Park). The annual bonfire activities start at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20: At 5 p.m., Homecoming registration and a reception honoring the award recipients will be held in the Gallego Center, followed by an alumni dinner gathering at 506 North 8th St., Alpine. At 6:30 p.m., a women's basketball 20-year reunion will be held at Kokernot Lodge. At 9 p.m., the lighting of the Bar-SR-Bar and a torch lighting ceremony in the Gallego Center parking lot will be held. Saturday, Oct. 21: A women's basketball 20-year reunion-recognition will be held at the Gallego Center at 8 a.m., followed by an Alumni Association meeting at 8:15 a.m. in the Espino Conference Center, University Center. The annual Homecoming parade will be held at 10 a.m., proceeding from the Alpine Civic Center, east on Holland Ave. to Jackson Field. Robie Golden, Alpine, former director of the Alumni Association, will serve as grand Marshal. After the parade, a tailgate party will be held at Jackson Field starting at 11:30 a.m. At 1 p.m., the Lobos will battle McMurry University in an American Southwest Conference football game. Coronation of the 2006 Homecoming Queen and King will be held at halftime. At 6:30 p.m., an alumni gathering will be held at the home of President R. Vic and Mary Jane Morgan. At 7:30 p.m., Dr. Paul Weyerts, Alpine; Texas Ranger Lt. Jerry Byrne, Jr., Rockwall; and attorney Sam Sparks, San Angelo, will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards. Mrs. Paul "Teeby" Forchheimer, Alpine, will receive the Slingin' Sammy Baugh Award for Outstanding Service. The Hall of Honor/Distinguished Alumni banquet will be held in the University Center. Joining the Hall of Honor will be former women's basketball standout Leslie Martin-Storer, Canyon; Kim Hughes, Monahans, men's basketball; and Dr. Chet Sample, former athletic director and basketball coach, now serving as dean of the School of Professional Studies at Sul Ross. Tickets for Distinguished Alumni/Hall of Honor Banquet will cost $15 per person. Sunday, Oct. 22: a brunch buffet is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. in the UC Dining Services. Marfa Sector looking at increase in agents U.S. Border Patrol Public Affairs Officer Bill Brooks told a meeting of local business people and public officials Tuesday that the Marfa Sector could have an increase of two to three times its number of agents. AISD receives academic, financial accolades Alpine Independent School District learned last week it has been distinguished by both Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services and Texas' Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system. City seeking bids for trash collection The city of Alpine and Duncan Disposal are still at an impasse over financial issues concerning a new trash collection contract.
