Ranch Rodeo scheduled for August

The 2006 Ranch Rodeo of the Big Bend is scheduled for August 11-13 in Alpine. Teams from near and far have send in their entries and are loading their horses. Chuck wagon cooks from all over the state of Texas are on their way and there will be "Six White Horses" from Hardin-Simmons University. You do not want to miss one of the best events in Alpine.

This year's ranch rodeo is going to be three days of non-stop horse action. Friday, August 11 at 9:00 a.m. begins the weekend with a ranch cowboy cutting at the S.A.L.E. Arena. That evening at 6:00 p.m. starts the first of two performances of the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo.

All teams will compete and every event will run each night. However, not every team will be in each event both nights. Any event that a team does not compete in on Friday will be completed on Saturday evening.

Big Bend Ranch Rodeo events include: Ranch Bronc Riding - one member from each team will be required to ride a bucking horse for 8 seconds in a working ranch saddle and one-rein halter.

Wild Cow Milking - four members from each team will be required to rope a cow and milk her in less than two minutes. Milking may not commence until the rope is off the cow, so three men must hold her.

Team Doctoring - three members from each team must pick on numbered animal from a large herd, rope it, and place a non-toxic pain mark between the animal's eyes in less than two minutes.

Team Branding - up to six members from each team can compete here. Two teams will compete at the same time and they each have two minutes to rope, throw, and mark with non-toxic paint, two calves each.

Team Penning - three men from each tea have three minutes to cut three head of cattle from a large herd and pen them in a portable pen placed in arena opposite the herd.

These five events can earn each team points toward qualifying for the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in November. In addition to these events, the ranchers will compete in a bedroll race that does not earn the WCRR points, and there will be some kids events and door prize opportunities.

Saturday, August 12th at 8:00 a.m. starts off with a Ranch Horse Association of America competition where eligible horses and riders compete in several ranch related, horsemanship areas. These include reining, working cow horses, and roping. Immediately following is a youth event of much of the same nature, except the roping requirement will be dropped.

On Saturday afternoon at 4:45 there will be a Chuck Wagon cook-off and feed. The cooks will be serving some of the best ranch cooking you have ever tasted. The Saturday night performance will start at 6:00. It will end with an awards presentation.

Please come out and enjoy this great event. If you have any questions or want more information call Monty Kimball at 432-837-5832.
