City, County to help purchase fire truck
The city of Alpine and Brewster County have agreed insure that the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department has a ladder truck in the near future.
Both governmental bodies have met in the last week and pledged their support, including financial, to help the fire department in their quest.
The Alpine council met last week and pledged to support the purchase on the condition that the county do the same. The council in discussion said that they could support half of a proposed $128,000 ladder truck the AFD had located in Alabama. No actual vote was taken to solidify to proposition.
The Brewster County Commissioners met in regular session Monday and formally approved to fund a 10 percent down payment on the truck as well as accept responsibility for 50 percent of the purchase price.
In addition to the support being offered by the county and city the AFD currently has an account set up at Transpecos Banks to help fund the project. The account currently has approximately $30,000.
According to Alpine and Brewster County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Santry the need has existed for a long time in light of several buildings over 20 feet in the area.
