The Avalanche has served Alpine and the Big Bend Region since 1891. It is one of the oldest newspapers in Texas. Founded in 1891 by Jack Lee, the newspaper has enjoyed a long history of being the predominant news source for Brewster County. The Avalanche has a long-standing history with the citizens of Alpine and the Big Bend Region. Alpine is located 57 miles south of Interstate Highway 10 on Highway 67. The Big Bend region's population is more than 25,000, and Alpine has established itself as the hub of regional activity.
